What is colour season analysis?

Colour season analysis is a method of identifying which colours harmonise with your natural colouring — your skin tone, undertone, eye colour and hair colour. By grouping people into four seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter) and 12 sub-seasons, it identifies the colours that make you look vibrant and alive versus those that wash you out or clash.

The system was developed from the principles of colour theory and has been used by personal stylists and image consultants for decades. Solla brings it to everyone for free using AI analysis.

How does colour season analysis work?

Your colour season is determined by three key factors:

Solla analyses your selfie for all three factors and matches you to one of 12 sub-seasons, giving you a precise colour palette rather than a broad category.

The 4 colour seasons explained

Spring

Springs have warm undertones with clear, bright colouring. Think golden skin, bright eyes and warm hair. Your best colours are warm, clear and relatively saturated — coral, peach, warm turquoise, ivory, camel and golden yellow. Avoid muted, dusty or very dark shades which make Springs look dull.

Summer

Summers have cool undertones with soft, muted colouring. Think pink-toned skin, soft eyes and ash-toned hair. Your best colours are cool, soft and gently muted — dusty rose, powder blue, soft lavender, muted teal and dove grey. Avoid very warm, orange-based colours or anything too saturated.

Autumn

Autumns have warm undertones with rich, earthy colouring. Think golden or olive skin, warm brown or hazel eyes and chestnut or auburn hair. Your best colours are warm, muted and earthy — terracotta, olive green, camel, burnt sienna and chocolate brown. Avoid cool, blue-based or very bright colours.

Winter

Winters have cool undertones with deep, high-contrast colouring. Think fair or deep skin with cool undertones, dark or striking eyes and dark or stark hair. Your best colours are cool, clear and high contrast — true black, navy, ruby red, emerald green and icy white. Avoid warm, muted or earthy tones.

Why does colour season matter for your wardrobe?

When you wear colours from your season near your face, they reflect light back onto your skin and make you look more awake, healthy and vibrant. When you wear the wrong colours, they can make you look tired, washed out or older than you are — even if the outfit is otherwise well put together.

Colour season analysis is why some people seem to always look good even in simple outfits — they've (consciously or not) found their colours. Solla makes this accessible to everyone.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is AI colour season analysis?

Solla's AI analyses your selfie for undertone, depth and chroma — the same factors a trained colour analyst would assess in person. For best results use a clear selfie in natural light with no filters. The analysis is most accurate when your natural colouring is visible.

Can I have mixed season traits?

Yes — this is why the 12 sub-season system exists. Rather than forcing everyone into just 4 boxes, sub-seasons like Soft Summer, True Autumn or Bright Spring account for the nuance in individual colouring. Solla identifies your sub-season for the most precise result.

Do all my clothes need to be my season colours?

No. Colour season matters most for items worn near your face — tops, jackets, scarves, earrings and makeup. Items worn away from your face like trousers, shoes and bags have more flexibility. Neutral basics work across most seasons.

Is Solla free?

Yes — your colour season analysis, four best colours, season headline and daily colour tip are all free. Glow and Luxe plans unlock your full colour palette, makeup and hair guides, colour checker and daily outfit engine.
